Empowering Financial Agility:
Small businesses are the heartbeat of the European economy, yet they often struggle with the rigid timelines of traditional credit. My mission was to design Qonto’s first in-house financing solution: Pay Later. We set out to create a tool that didn't just feel like a loan, but like a safety net. The goal was twofold: give users instant access to funds to maximize their growth potential, and position Qonto as a primary credit lead across European markets.

Financing is deeply personal for an entrepreneur. We had an aggressive target of €15.3M in financing by 2024, but to get there, we had to build absolute trust. I worked at the intersection of product strategy and user empathy, ensuring that while we met the requirements for future credit licensing, the interface remained fast, transparent, and approachable. We weren't just building a feature; we were building a new pillar of the Qonto brand.
To move from a blank slate to a regulated financial product, I utilized a structured framework that balanced speed with technical rigor:
1. Value assessment (VA): We began with a deep-dive competitive analysis to identify where traditional banks were failing SMEs. This phase was critical for defining the project scope, core goals, and success criteria. I facilitated early design critiques to ensure cross-functional buy-in and to align all stakeholders on a direction that was both ambitious and achievable.
2. Value engineering (VE): I held regular sessions with engineers to identify potential technical constraints and map out the "messy" edge cases of financing (approvals, repayments, and denials). This proactive collaboration ensured feasibility and minimized friction down the line. During this phase, I completed all high-fidelity designs and interactive prototypes, pressure-testing the user journey against real-world technical requirements.
3. Specs: I created detailed specifications for every screen across Web and Mobile. In this phase, we also finalized all product copy and brand assets. While specialized teams produced these, my role was to oversee the entire process to ensure every word and visual reached our high-quality standards and remained perfectly aligned within the human-centered experience we defined.
4.Delivery and QA: As the guardian of the final experience, I conducted rigorous QA testing to validate the quality of the build. This involved working side-by-side with developers to ensure the "0 to 1" vision was delivered without compromise.
5.Success Analysis: Post-launch, we analyzed the solution’s performance against our initial success criteria. These insights were used to validate the effectiveness of the design and gather critical data to inform future iterations of the financing roadmap.

Before drawing a single wireframe, I deconstructed how SME financing was handled across different European markets. We didn’t just look at global competitors; we looked at each country individually: France, Italy, Spain, and Germany, to understand the unique cultural expectations of small business owners.
This research allowed us to identify 'friction points' where traditional language felt too cold or intimidating. By understanding these regional nuances, I was able to advocate for a more supportive experience and tailored naming conventions that resonated with local users. This ensured 'Pay Later' felt like a trusted, homegrown tool rather than a generic, imported feature.

Great products are built on great documentation. I collaborated directly with the engineering team to build a dedicated Financing Component Library for web and mobile. We co-created the documentation for the 'Cockpit' and data tables, ensuring that as the Pay Later service scales, the UI remains consistent and easy for any team at Qonto to implement.

Owning the "0 to 1" Journey, I developed the Pay Later MVP from the ground up, owning the end-to-end design for both Web and Mobile. Beyond the pixels, my role was highly collaborative:
Strategic Voice: I actively shaped the product roadmap and facilitated technical alignment meetings together with PM's.
Cross-Functional Lead: I briefed the Branding team and worked closely with UX Writers and Product Marketing to ensure the "Qonto Voice" felt empathetic and clear.
Quality Guardian: I led the Design QA and review process to ensure the final build matched the high-fidelity vision we promised our users.
Growth Powered by Empathy
The results exceeded our most optimistic forecasts. By focusing on a fast and easy user experience, we didn't just hit our goals, we shattered them:
Scale: Over €34.4M financed (surpassing our €15.3M goal by over 100%).
Adoption: 76,000 active users and over 33,800 successful financings.
Retention: We successfully moved the needle on customer acquisition, proving that when you solve a user's most stressful problem, you earn their long-term loyalty.
The Power of Human-Centric Finance
Launching Pay Later was an exhaustive journey of alignment, testing, and refinement. It taught me that even in the highly regulated world of FinTech, the most successful products are the ones that feel the most human. Seeing thousands of business owners use this tool to navigate their daily challenges has been the most rewarding part of this project.
